Hotel review: Inturotel Cala Esmeralda, Majorca
Our visit to the Inturotel Cala Esmeralda on the beautiful island of Majorca, was solely for the purpose of being able to de-stress and calm down before the wedding. After a very quick 2 hour flight from London and an easy 50 minute transfer, my parents, other half and I were by the pool by 11am on our first day, very happy we had arrived in relaxation paradise.
We arrived by private taxi and as we pulled into the bay where the hotel is situated I immediately knew I had made the right choice of hotel. The Cala Esmeralda is part of the larger Inturotel chain who have a number of different resorts in Cala d’Or, the Cala Esmeralda is the only one that is Adults Only (something of which becomes very important when you are surrounded by children every day at work!) The hotel is in a very aesthetically pleasing, all white, 3 storey building (no high rises here!) which overlooks the beautiful Esmeralda cove and one of the hotel’s pools.
We were quickly checked in by the lovely staff on the desk and didn’t have to wait long until our rooms were ready, this was a massive help as we had arrived on an early flight and normally rooms are not available until early afternoon. If you do arrive in on an early flight, contact Cala Esmeralda and they will be more than happy to help. My parents actually returned to the hotel this year and were able to get into their room early too.
Our rooms were not luxurious by any means but were of a decent size and always spotlessly clean. I have to say every inch of the hotel is spotlessly clean. The only problem I did have was the lack of a decent number of electrical sockets.
The food and drinks
As we were on half-board we ate in the hotel every day. I’d read a few Tripadvisor reviews that the food could be a bit repetitive but we found there to be a fantastic variety every night to choose from. There was always a fish dish, a roasted meat, a meat in a different type of sauce, plain grilled meat and fish, pasta, potatoes, several types of vegetable and countless salads, cheese and other deli foods, desserts, ice cream, cakes and fruit. Everything was cooked to perfection and it’s still the best food we’ve had in any resort. There were also gourmet nights each week where the food was even more spectacular than the normal buffet with the most spectacularly carved fruit I’ve ever seen.
Breakfast was excellent too, with options for cooked or continental breakfast from the buffet and they now serve prosecco in the morning according to my Mum who was there last month. We also ate at the poolside cafe every day which did great salads, pasta and sandwich dishes at reasonable prices and was ideal for us as we didn’t want to stray too far from the resort.
Of course being on holiday it’s natural to have a few beverages of the alcoholic variety. The main hotel bar has a happy hour (which is more like 2 hours) where we enjoyed several 2 for 1 drinks. No one over indulges and gets silly, but who can say no to 2 for the price of 1 cocktails! The Margaritas were my favourite as was the white sangria.
Because we didn’t venture too far away from the hotel, this gave me ample time to relax by the two hotel pools and spend time in the small but beautiful cove directly in front. The main pool overlooking the beach and sea has such a stunning view that most days I just camped out here and enjoyed the sun and sea. As the hotel is Adults Only it was also extremely peaceful and I did find myself dozing off a fair few times.
There are some steps down to the sea straight from the pool so you can jump right into the blue without even having to go down to the beach if you don’t want to. The beach is of course beautiful too but does get quite busy during peak times of the day so we just stuck to the two pools.
On an evening the pool area is lit up with fairy lights and is the perfect place to enjoy a drink after a romantic stroll around the cove.
I was astounded by the level of service and attention to detail all the staff have for their work – nothing was ever too much trouble. Waiters at the bars remembered our favourite drinks, the reception staff were great at helping us to organise our diving itinerary and just generally making us feel really welcome.
As I’ve mentioned already in the post my parents loved our stayed here so much that they re-booked themselves in this year and had a fabulous two weeks and have already started talking about making a return next year. I wouldn’t hesitate in returning to the Inturotel Cala Esmeralda and really hope to return as the standard of the hotel is perfect for a fly and flop break.
Pin for later…
