Hotel review: Secrets Maroma Beach Honeymoon
When the other half proposed I hate to admit it but I began planning the honeymoon before the majority of the wedding! I had some clear ideas about what I (I mean we) wanted to do; 1. Relax on a beautiful white sandy beach 2. scuba dive 3. drink cocktails. After a fair amount of searching around and deciding to leave the super expensive safari and Indian ocean holiday for another year, we settled upon the idea of Mexico as we would just be outside of the Hurricane season after our August wedding and it still offered amazing diving, stunning beaches and one of the best all inclusive hotels in the world.
We booked our honeymoon with British Airways Holidays as we found that somehow this gave us the best deal, it also meant that we were able to spread the cost of the honeymoon over a number of months as you can log in at any point and pay towards your holiday. This helped us enormously with our wedding budget and keeping control over our finances.
Our arrival at Secrets Maroma Beach was glorious, we’d opted to pay a little bit more to be part of the Preferred Club so as soon as our feet touched the ground outside the transfer taxi we were whisked away in a golf buggy to a separate check-in area. We quickly checked in with our first cocktail already at the desk waiting for us, a brief explanation from our concierge and were then shown to our room. A small perk of being in the preferred club is that the rooms are in the first two blocks nearest the ocean so you get pretty decent views from almost every room and upgraded mini-bar treats. All the rooms are appointed in a similar style and feel luxurious without being over the top – everyone at the hotel seems to be celebrating something and I think Secrets do really well to make everyone feel special with little touches like this.
On our first full day we indulged in everything the all-inclusive resort had to offer including sea kayaking and many many cocktails, spending the majority of the day relaxing on the beautiful and award winning Playa Maroma beach. We came to Mexico with the intention of doing our usual activity and excursion style type of trip but after a day on the beach I was starting to wish we had left some extra days for just doing nothing! After all the stress and build up to a wedding I would 100% recommend some time to just relax and to not pack your honeymoon full of things to do every day. Luckily we were able to be quite flexible with what we had planned and dropped a day of diving to spend more time just soaking up the sun and drinking more cocktails. There is so much on offer to do at Secrets Maroma if you want to get involved with the activities offered by the Entertainments Staff but we were quite happy to just sit by the pools or the beach and get hand delivered drinks and food when needed.
The hotel has two pools that are separated by a large sun-lounger area and the bigger pool set back off the beach is where you will find the swim up pool bar. This was one of the other half’s only requests when deciding where we should book for our Honeymoon! The whole resort is pretty big but because all the areas are landscaped beautifully it never feels over crowded or like you are in a gigantic complex.
Another perk of being in the preferred club is the club room which you have access to throughout the day, as well as the whole resort being all-inclusive, in the PC we were able to order from all the top level spirits and champagne as well help ourselves to a never ending supply of treats and snacks in a blissfully air-conditioned lounge! I loved the Secrets philosophy to all-inclusive however as even not being in the PC meant you were able to go to pretty much any restaurant/cafe at any point of the day and find something to take your fancy and if all else fails there is 24 hour room service included as part of the deal. You don’t even have to open the door as there is a ‘Secrets’ box in every room accessible from both outside and inside where the trays of goodies are left for you to get to in your own time. Genius idea! Our favourite night however did come as part of our PC Honeymoon package where we were able to sample a gorgeous 5 course meal on the beach. It was totally romance over-board but if you can’t do this on honeymoon when can you?!
