The Coolest Things to Do in Morocco At the Beach
While it may not be a destination that is at the top of many peoples’ Travel Bucket List, Morocco boasts a plethora of fantastic opportunities to give you a travel experience that not many people know about. It boasts historical cities, delicious traditional cuisine, and stunning landscapes that will suit any nomad.
But one place that it excels is on the coast. Whether you’re looking for something to get the adrenaline pumping or relax on white sands listening to lapping waves, Morocco has something for you.
Morocco is a favored destination for those who like to catch some waves and revel in the high-octane enjoyment that surfing brings. The most popular destination is Taghazout, but Essaouira (more on that soon) offers plenty of great options, too.
Once there, you can enjoy a variety of surfing activities, including on a regular board, windsurfing, or even take up kitesurf lessons so you can go back home after your vacation ready to get your friends down to the beach to show off your skills.
Even if you’ve never done any surfing of any kind before, you’ll be able to rent gear and have knowledgeable instructors on hand to guide you. For those who have always wanted to try it, there are few better and more affordable places to go.
Relax in Essaouira
You’ll find Essaouira just a few hours from Marrakesh, and the beach is one of the favorite places to go for tourists, travelers, and curious types alike. Unlike other parts of the country, you won’t find an abundance of touts, which allows you to take a leisurely stroll through the streets and take everything in.
The sea air is good for the soul, and it feels as if you are in the only place in the world with fresh fish, even though you’re sure that’s not the case. The Citadel is an old fort that boasts a fishing port, where you can check out the catch of the day, while the ancient city (known locally as a medina) is protected by ramparts that date back to the 18th century.
Sample Local Fish
No matter which coastal part of Morocco you visit, you simply must try the local fish. There are many stalls where you can try what the fishermen have hauled in that day, or you can treat yourself to a fancy meal at a seafront restaurant listening to the waves and whatever entertainment jingles through the waning light.
Of course, if you’re visiting on a budget, the stalls are always the best bet, and you can watch the vendors grill it right before your eyes. According to those who have been there and done that, stalls five and eleven do the best fish in Essaouira, so make sure to give them a visit.
Unlock Somewhere New
Sure, the regular travel trail is one that allows you to connect with others who have had exactly the same experience as you in exactly the same places. Still, there’s just something about trying somewhere new that others have not seen that makes your travels that little bit more magical.
